To summarize a PDF with AI, upload the file to an AI tool, ask for a short summary and then check the summary against the original. On an Android phone with Retexta, it takes four taps: New task, Explain something, Upload screenshot or PDF, and then Short summary on the result screen. One limit matters more than any other: Retexta reads the first 5 pages of a PDF, so a long document has to be summarized in parts.
| Your PDF | Best route in Retexta |
|---|---|
| A letter, notice or contract of up to 5 pages | Explain something: plain-language explanation and next steps, or a Short summary |
| A handout or article you want to learn from | Take notes (under More templates): Structured notes or Short summary |
| A long report or ebook | Summarize it chapter by chapter, or upload screenshots of the pages that matter |
| Text you can copy | Paste text instead of uploading the file |
| A Word file | Save or export it as a PDF first. Retexta accepts PDFs, images and plain text files |
Summarize a PDF with Retexta, step by step
Retexta is a cloud voice to text and AI writing app for Android. Besides audio, it takes PDFs, screenshots, photos and text.
- Open Retexta and tap New task.
- Under What do you want to do?, tap Explain something. It is one of the four goals on the start screen.
- Retexta asks Which language should the explanation be in? Pick the language you want to read the summary in.
- Under Add your input, tap Upload screenshot or PDF and pick the file in Android's file picker. You can select more than one file.
- Retexta sends the pages to its servers and writes a plain-language explanation with suggested next steps.
- On the result screen, switch the text type to Short summary if you only want the key points. The other types are Structured notes, Task list and Next steps. You can also make the result Shorter or More detailed, or tap Ask a follow-up to ask a question about the document.
- Read the summary next to the PDF. Retexta labels results "AI-generated. Check important details."
Upload screenshot or PDF and the Explain something goal are part of Retexta Pro. Retexta is free to try: new users get a few free Pro results to view in the app, but copying, sharing, exporting and screenshots of results need Retexta Pro or credits, and so does everything after the free results.
What Retexta reads in a PDF
We read these details in the app's code on September 25, 2026. We have not tested every kind of PDF on a phone.
| What | How Retexta handles it |
|---|---|
| Pages | The first 5 pages of each PDF. Page 6 and later are not sent. |
| Files per task | Up to 5 pages or images in total. The app then shows how many pages or images are "ready for AI analysis". |
| How the AI sees a page | Each page is turned into an image (longest side at most 1,600 pixels) and read from that image. Scanned pages take the same path. |
| File types | PDF, images (screenshots, photos) and plain text files. Other files show "Couldn't read that file. Try a screenshot, image, text file, or PDF." |
| Where it is processed | On Retexta's servers, not only on your phone. |
Because a page is read as an image, very small print can be harder for the AI to read than on your screen. If a page is dense, a screenshot zoomed into the part you need can work better than the whole page.
Summarizing a long PDF
A 40-page report does not fit into one task. Three ways around it:
- Chapter by chapter. Split the PDF into parts of 5 pages with a PDF tool, summarize each part and then paste the part summaries into a new task with Paste text to get one overall summary.
- Only the pages that matter. Many reports put the key points into an executive summary, a conclusion or a results table. Take screenshots of those pages and upload them.
- Copy the text. If you can select text in your PDF viewer, copy the section you need and use Paste text. Pasted text does not count toward the 5-page limit.
What to check in an AI summary
A summary is only useful if it is right. Before you act on it:
- Numbers, dates and amounts. Compare every one with the PDF. Tables are where misreadings happen most easily.
- What is missing. A short summary leaves things out by design. If the document is a contract or an official letter, read the parts about deadlines, costs and obligations yourself.
- Words like "must", "may" and "unless". Small words change the meaning of a rule, and a summary can flatten them.
- Who wrote it and when. Check that the summary matches the document's date and sender, not an older version.
Summaries are not advice
An AI summary helps you understand a document faster. It does not replace legal, tax or medical advice. For letters from authorities, our guide on writing a letter to a government agency shows how to answer, and the office itself can explain what it needs.
Example: a 2-page notice, summarized
We wrote this example ourselves to show the idea. It is not real app output, and your results will look different.
What the PDF says (shortened):
Notice of planned water interruption, Maple Court, buildings A to C.
On Wednesday, October 14, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the water supply will be shut off to replace the main valve.
Residents are asked to store drinking water in advance.
Washing machines and dishwashers should not run during this time.
After the work, water may be cloudy for up to one hour; let the cold tap run until it is clear.
Questions: property office, 555-0142, Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
As a Short summary:
No water in buildings A to C on Wednesday, October 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (valve replacement).
- Store drinking water the day before.
- Do not run the washing machine or dishwasher during the work.
- Afterwards, let the cold tap run until the water is clear (up to one hour).
Questions: property office, 555-0142, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The summary keeps the date, the times and the phone number, and drops the polite phrasing around them.
Free and online PDF summarizers
- Online tools ask you to upload the PDF to a website. Before you upload a contract, a medical letter or anything with personal data, check who runs the site and what it does with uploads.
- Your PDF viewer may have its own AI features. What they cost and where they process the file depends on the app, so check its help page.
- Retexta is free to try. Uploading PDFs is part of Retexta Pro.
What to do with the summary next
A summary often leads to a reply: our guide on how to dictate an email on Android shows how to turn your answer into a finished email. Studying from handouts and lectures? Our guide on turning a lecture into notes covers the study side. For voice messages and recordings instead of documents, see how to summarize a voice message.
