How to summarize a voice memo or a long voice message

Summarize a long voice memo or WhatsApp voice message with AI on Android: which summary to pick, the steps, an example, and what to check before you reply.

To summarize a voice memo or a long voice message, turn the audio into text and let AI shorten it to the points that matter: what happened, what is asked of you, and by when. On Android with Retexta you save the recording as a file, choose Explain something or Take notes, tap Import audio and switch the result to Short summary. For a voice message someone sent you, Explain something is usually the best start, because it also lists the next steps.

What you have Goal in Retexta What you get
A long voice message from someone else Explain something Plain-language explanation and suggested next steps; switch to Short summary for the key points only
Your own voice memo with ideas or errands Take notes (under More templates) Structured notes, a Task list or a Short summary
A recorded meeting or call Summarize a meeting Summary, decisions and action items
A voice message you need to answer Reply to a message A finished reply

Summarize a voice memo with Retexta, step by step

Retexta is a cloud voice to text and AI writing app for Android.

  1. Save the recording as an audio file. In your recorder app, use share or export and save the file to your phone or cloud drive. For WhatsApp, tap and hold the voice message, tap Share and send it to an app that keeps files. Retexta does not show up in the share menu itself, so this step comes first.
  2. Open Retexta and tap New task.
  3. Under What do you want to do?, tap Explain something (on the start screen) or open More templates and tap Take notes.
  4. With Explain something, Retexta asks which language the explanation should be in. Pick yours. The voice message can be in another language.
  5. Under Add your input, tap Import audio and pick the file.
  6. Retexta transcribes the audio on its servers and writes the result.
  7. On the result screen, switch the text type to Short summary, and the length to Shorter if you want it even tighter. With Explain something you can also tap Ask a follow-up.
  8. Check the summary. Retexta labels results "AI-generated. Check important details."

Import audio and every goal except Transcript only are part of Retexta Pro. Retexta is free to try: new users get a few free Pro results to view in the app, but copying, sharing, exporting and screenshots of results need Retexta Pro or credits, and so does everything after the free results.

It is someone else's voice

Retexta processes the audio on servers, not only on your phone. A voice message was recorded by the person who sent it, so think about whether they would be fine with that before you upload it, whichever app or website you use.

Example: a 2-minute voice message, summarized

We wrote this example ourselves to show the idea. It is not real app output, and your results will look different.

The voice message, as a plain transcript:

Hi, it's Dana from the soccer club, sorry, this is a long one. So, the tournament on Saturday is moved, not the field by the school anymore, it's at Riverside Park now, field three I think, yes field three. Kickoff is still ten, but they want the kids there at nine fifteen for warm up. Oh and please bring the green jersey, not the white one, because the other team is also white. We still need two parents to drive, if you can do it tell me by Thursday. And snacks, Mia's mom does fruit, so maybe you could do water? Okay, that's it, thanks, bye.

As a Short summary:

Saturday tournament moved to Riverside Park, field 3.
- Arrive 9:15 for warm-up, kickoff 10:00.
- Bring the green jersey (not white).
- Two parents needed to drive: reply to Dana by Thursday.
- Could you bring water? (Mia's mom brings fruit.)

As next steps (Explain something):

- Tell Dana by Thursday whether you can drive.
- Pack the green jersey and water for Saturday.
- Plan to leave so you arrive at Riverside Park by 9:15.

The summary answers "what changed and what do I need to do" in five lines, without listening to the message twice.

What to check before you act on a summary

  • Times, places and numbers. A misheard "field three" or "nine fifteen" changes everything. Play the part of the recording again if a detail looks odd.
  • Questions addressed to you. Long voice messages often hide one question in the middle. Make sure the summary kept it.
  • Names. Unusual names are the most common transcription mistake. Check the spelling before you reply or forward.
  • Tone. A summary drops the tone of voice. If the message sounded upset or urgent, the summary will not show it.

Other ways to summarize a voice message

  • Your phone's recorder app. Google's help page for the Recorder app says summaries are available on Pixel 8 and later for some languages, processed in the cloud. They are for recordings made in that app. Our guide on transcribing a voice memo on Android covers Pixel and Samsung recorders.
  • WhatsApp. WhatsApp's help page describes transcripts of voice messages, not summaries. On Android they cover only English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. We have not checked whether other features in WhatsApp summarize voice messages. See how to convert a WhatsApp voice message to text.
  • General AI chat apps. They can summarize text you paste in. Whether they accept an audio file depends on the app and plan, so check it before you rely on it.

What to do with the summary next

A summary often leads to an answer: in Retexta, the Reply to a message goal writes one from the same voice message. Files in other formats work the same way, see MP3 to text. For documents instead of recordings, read how to summarize a PDF. More about the app: Retexta, voice to text for Android.

Questions

Good to know

Can AI summarize a voice message?

Yes. An AI app transcribes the audio and then writes a short summary, notes or a to-do list from it. The summary is only as good as the transcript, so check names, times and numbers against the recording before you act on them.

How do I summarize a WhatsApp voice message?

Save the voice message as a file from WhatsApp (tap and hold it, then Share, and send it to your files or cloud drive). Then import the file into an app that summarizes audio. Retexta does not appear in WhatsApp's share menu, so the save step comes first.

Which Retexta goal gives the shortest summary?

Explain something or Take notes, then switch the text type to Short summary and the length to Shorter. For a recorded meeting, Summarize a meeting gives a summary with decisions and action items instead.

Is there a free way to summarize a voice memo?

Some phone recorder apps summarize their own recordings, for example Google Recorder on Pixel 8 and later for some languages. In Retexta, importing audio and the summary goals are part of Retexta Pro; new users get a few free Pro results to view in the app, and copying or sharing results needs Retexta Pro or credits.
