Personalized meditation: how it works

How a personalized meditation is made: the mood check-in, what to say, how the AI writes the script, how long it is, and what it can and can't know about you.

A personalized meditation is a guided meditation written for your situation right now, not for everyone. In AI Meditation: Sleep & Calm it works like this: you tell the app how you're doing, by talking or typing, the app's AI writes a new meditation around what you said, and an AI voice reads it to you. Without a subscription it's 5 minutes long; with Mindfulness Plus it can be up to 20 minutes.

Below we go through the check-in screen by screen, show what to say for a good result, and are clear about what personalization can and can't do.

The check-in, step by step

This is the flow in the app (version 2026.6.1), from the Personalized Meditation card. The quoted texts are the app's own.

  1. Tap Start your check-in. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland you first see how the feature works and give your consent. You can tap Not now and nothing is sent.
  2. Answer "How are you doing right now?". Hold the microphone and "tell me about your day", or type into the field below: "Or write here how your day was and how you feel". What you say is transcribed and appears as text, so you can check it before sending.
  3. Pick a style if you like. Under "In a special style?" the app's own calm voice is selected. You can instead choose a character, such as Grandma, Night train conductor or Lighthouse keeper, or describe your own. This changes the tone, not the practice.
  4. Check the length. Without a subscription the length is fixed at 5 minutes. With Mindfulness Plus the length is automatic, or you tap Change and set it, up to 20 minutes.
  5. Tap Create my meditation. While the AI writes, a player screen titled "Your meditation" appears and a short spoken welcome may play, so you're not waiting in silence.
  6. Listen. The meditation then continues on its own in the player. Afterwards you find it under Your meditations, where you can save it to favorites.

There's a second way in: the Today's meditation card offers one theme per day, such as "When You Can't Stop Rehearsing Tomorrow". It needs no check-in; the AI writes the meditation around that theme. More on that in our guide to daily meditation.

What to say in your check-in

The AI can only work with what you give it. These four things help the most (our mood check-in guide has more questions to ask yourself):

  • What happened. "I had an argument with someone I love" gives the meditation a clear starting point.
  • How it feels in you. Tense, tired, restless, heavy. A body word helps the script choose between calming and grounding.
  • What you need now. To fall asleep, to calm down before a meeting, to stop replaying a conversation.
  • When you'll listen. In bed, on a break, before a hard conversation.

A check-in that works well, in one breath:

I have a job interview tomorrow morning.
My stomach is tight and I keep rehearsing answers.
I want to calm down so I can sleep tonight.

What doesn't help: a very long story, or only one word like "stressed". Leave out names, contact details and anything you wouldn't want processed. The app's examples are a good guide: "I can't switch off after a long day at work", "I'm worried about an upcoming competition".

What gets personalized, and what doesn't

Personalized Not personalized
The situation the meditation talks about The basic techniques: breath, body, letting thoughts pass
The tone (calm voice or a style you pick) The voice itself, which is the app's AI voice
The length, within your plan Whether it works for you: no one can promise that
References to earlier check-ins, which are kept on your phone Anything you didn't say: the AI doesn't know your history or health
Your name, if you allow the app to use it

Personalized or library session: which one?

  • Choose a personalized meditation when something specific is on your mind today and a general session feels beside the point.
  • Choose a library session when you want to learn a technique, build a routine or fall asleep to something familiar. The steps are predictable, which makes them easier to follow when you're new. Good starts are What Is Meditation? and Mini-Reset: Arriving and Relaxing.
  • Wondering how long to meditate? Five minutes a day is a reasonable start. Our guide on how to meditate for beginners explains why regular beats long.

Honest limits

  • No person checks the script. The consent screen says the meditation "isn't checked by a person, so it won't always be perfect." If a line is off, use Report in the player.
  • It needs a connection. The meditation is written on a server, so offline you can't create one.
  • Your words leave the phone. To write the meditation, the check-in is sent to the app's AI provider (currently OpenAI) and processed in the United States. The app's own servers don't keep it; the details are in the privacy policy.
  • It's not for a crisis. If what you write sounds like a crisis, the app doesn't write a meditation. It shows emergency numbers and helplines instead.
  • Spoken check-ins are limited per month. When they run out, you can still type.

Try it

AI Meditation: Sleep & Calm writes your personalized meditation after a short check-in and labels it as written by AI. Without a subscription it's 5 minutes; Mindfulness Plus includes sessions of up to 20 minutes and several personalized meditations each day. Meditations are in English and German, on Android. See how the app works, try it for free, no account needed.

Your health

This app is a wellness app and does not replace medical or psychological care. A personalized meditation is a calming practice, not help in a crisis. If things feel overwhelming, please reach out to a doctor or another professional. In immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

Questions

Good to know

What is a personalized meditation?

A guided meditation written for your situation instead of for everyone. In AI Meditation: Sleep & Calm you say or type how you're doing, and the app's AI writes a new meditation around that and reads it to you with an AI voice. The practice inside it is ordinary meditation: breathing, noticing the body, letting thoughts pass.

What should I say in the check-in?

One or two sentences about what's going on and what you need, in your own words. For example: I can't switch off after a long day at work, I need to calm down before sleep. Concrete details help more than long stories. Leave out names and contact details.

How long is a personalized meditation?

Without a subscription it's 5 minutes. With Mindfulness Plus you can let the app choose the length or set it yourself, up to 20 minutes, and create several personalized meditations each day.

Is a personalized meditation better than a normal one?

Not necessarily. It can fit today's situation closely, but no person checks the script before you hear it, and there is no research showing that a personalized script works better. If you're learning to meditate, a library session with predictable steps is often the easier start.
